We believe we accomplished this with the launch of A24+/Beta. We first noticed this trend at the end of last year, but since we believe so hard in this game and in making something satisfying for all of you, we agreed to remain together until we collectively felt the game was in a good place. It’s true! However, many of the members of the team are ready to pursue other opportunities, for both personal and professional reasons. The third task is improving performance, which we are addressing now, and will continue to improve after release. With the launch of the new builder and multiplayer, we’ve tackled two of the three largest critical engine-related tasks (the stuff that only our team can really do). Though it’s true that Stonehearth doesn’t contain everything we dreamed about – the decisions we made on what to prioritize inevitably led to some systems not being as robust as we’d have liked–we feel that the game is ready for a larger audience to enjoy. Finally, the game is moddable from top to bottom and its Steam Workshop page is full of content beyond our original imaginings. There is no other game in the world with a 3D builder like ours, and no other community builder that offers synchronous multiplayer the way we do. The campaign at last has a beginning, a middle, and an end, and the world of Hearth is now full of allies, enemies, classes, systems, and encounters we consider worthwhile to experience. Most of the features we originally dreamed up at the time of the Kickstarter are implemented. Stonehearth finally feels like the game we envisioned when we started on this journey. Yeah, it’s sort of a stunning statement, especially those of us who have been working on it for so long. Really? It’s… Done? I’m sort of… stunned! Following that release, most of the team will move on to other projects, though we’ll provide support, modding guidance, and bugfixes through the end of the year. Therefore, at the end of July, we will exit Stonehearth from Steam Early Access with our 1.0 release. From all of your feedback, we believe that many of you have also had a few (or more than a few) wonderful experiences inside Hearth. Stonehearth has become a game that we on the team are genuinely excited to play. Well… as of today, we feel we’re finally there. So they are going to open it up to modders to accomplish whatever they did not.įor many years now, you’ve been asking us: when will Stonehearth be finished? And we’ve always answered–when it’s done! The email very much reads like they wanted to do more, but the team is ready to move on and do something else. The game will be supported until the end of the year. The game is done and will come out of EA at the end of the month. The best way to play this game is with friends. So overall, Mini Motor Racing X is a decent game. It just needs a few fixes and changes to make this part of the game amazing. Despite these issues I actually had a lot of fun in the multiplayer, because of how chaotic and competitive the game was. These issues kept the single player side of bumper ball from being fun, and for the multiplayer almost every round ended with neither side getting a single point. The ball was often bouncing too high or going in the wrong direction. My second issue is the ball physics, which were too light. My first issue is the AI, which works well in the races, but was way too aggressive in Bumper Ball, and made it more annoying than fun. Bumper Ball is basically a Rocket League clone in VR, which sounds amazing at first, but a few issues hold it back. And the soundtrack really enhances the environments and makes every level more exciting. Each of the environments are detailed, crystal clear, and look great in all perspectives. The multiplayer was done perfectly in this game.Īnd finally before we talk about Bumper Ball, I have to mention the environments and soundtrack, which are both amazing. There’s built in voice chat, a party system, and voting system. Which really enhances the game, and just makes everything more exciting and fun to play. Both perspectives have their perks and disadvantages, but what’s great is that you can switch between these perspectives at any point in the game.Īnother great feature is that each game mode can be played with up to 4 friends online. You can play it up close to your car, or far away like if you were playing with a mini RC car. One cool thing about Mini Motor Racing X is that there are different perspectives in the game. I preferred Type X mode over the normal mode, it was just a more exciting experience, and with normal mode I found it much harder to catch back up if you get behind in the race. The normal mode is just races with boost items only, but Type X adds several different items to use in the map. In the standard races you can switch between a normal mode and Type X mode. I was hoping the time trials would show a ghost of your best timed run, but it seems like they did the bare minimum for this mode. And the time trials are just the races without other cars, and a timer. The free play mode lets you play any track you want without having to unlock anything. It’s a standard career mode, and doesn’t do anything amazing. The career mode has you progressing level by level racing against AI. The only big feature absent from this game is drifting, but because of the way the movement works with the car, I never really felt like I needed drifting to do better in the game. Your car can move in any direction, use items, and has a built in boost feature. There are several different cars in the game, and each of them have their own stats. The racing consists of moving across small tracks trying to complete all laps faster than your opponents. We’ll talk about Bumper Ball later though. The game has a career mode, free play mode, time trials, and bumper ball mode. Mini Motor Racing X is a PSVR racing game that has you controlling a small car across several different tracks and game modes. Today I’m taking a look at Mini Motor Racing X, by developers Binary Mill, who previously released Rush VR and Gun Club VR. But I didn’t expect another kart racer to come out so shortly after Touring Karts. It filled the void of VR kart racers on the PSVR, and gave me what I wanted from a kart racer. 10 days ago I reviewed a VR karting game known as Touring Karts, and I enjoyed it. However, because our patient had a history of late posttraumatic seizure, we changed his medication from phenytoin to carbamazepine, a safer alternative, rather than stop his anti-seizure treatment. 6 Seizure prophylaxis is not indicated in all cases of posttraumatic seizure. It is diagnosed clinically when a patient has gingival enlargement, is taking a medication from one of the causative classes, and has no intraoral or general physical examination features that suggest an inflammatory, hereditary, or systemic condition.ĭiscontinuing the offending drug coupled with meticulous oral hygiene may lead to resolution, but surgical intervention to the gingiva is usually required. Secondary inflammation of these lesions leads to gum bleeding and discomfort with chewing or toothbrushing. 6ĭrug-induced gingival overgrowth usually presents as enlargement of gingival tissue that encroaches on the tooth crowns. 5 It has a direct action on high-activity gingival fibroblasts, and the related severity of gingi-val enlargement is dose-dependent. Gingival hyperplasia is a condition when the gum tissue becomes enlarged and gingival cells increase in number. 4 Phenytoin is the most common culprit, and gingival enlargement is reported in up to 50% of patients who take the drug. Gingival Hyperplasia: Differential Diagnosis Associations: Bleeding gums especially with eating, flossing or brushing teeth Pathophysiology: Inflammation. In addition to gingival overgrowth, there was hypertrichosis over the upper and lower extremities.ĭrug-induced gingival overgrowth is a notable side effect of anticonvulsant drugs (phenytoin, vigabatrin, ethosuximide, topiramate, lamotrigine, valproate, phenobarbital), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine, tacrolimus, sirolimus), and calcium channel blockers (nifedipine, felodipine, verapamil, diltiazem). The gingival lesions did not bleed on probing but were tender and suppurative at some places. The gingival swelling covered more than one-third of the tooth crown in the upper row and more than two-thirds in the lower row ( Figure 1). Intraoral examination revealed generalized puffy, lobulated, swollen gums in the upper and lower jaws. No other abnormalities were noted relative to gait, reflexes, or autonomic function, and he had no nystagmus or confusion. Alan Lee, a 2008 graduate of the MSD/CAGS program, with help from Associate Professors of Periodontology & Oral Biology Drs. Siddika Selva Sume, a DSc candidate in Oral Biology and Dr. Trackman hopes to interfere with EMT in mice to determine if overgrowth decreases. “Taken together, the data support our hypothesis that EMT contributes to the pathology of gingival overgrowth,” Dr. He also looked at the ability of TGF-β1, a factor that drives gingival overgrowth, to stimulate EMT in primary human gingival epithelial cells in vitro. Trackman looked for loss of epithelial cell markers and gain of fibroblastic markers in the epithelium, and gain of markers of fibrosis in the connective tissue stroma in human tissue samples in vivo. “EMT was never considered to contribute to gingival overgrowth before, although features of the histopathology were a strong clue for this biological process occurring in all forms of human gingival overgrowth.”ĭr. “EMT is a normal part of embryonic development, but in adults occurs only in disease, specifically cancer and fibrosis,” Dr. Philip Trackman and colleagues show a cellular process called epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) could contribute to gingival overgrowth. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) Professor of Periodontology and Oral Biology Dr. In a new study, Boston University Henry M. While it happens for different reasons, drug-induced gingival overgrowth is a well-known side effect of medications including the anti-seizure drug phenytoin, the immunosuppressant cyclosporin A, and calcium channel blockers (to treat high blood pressure) such as nifedipine. When gum tissue grows over the teeth, it’s called gingival overgrowth, and it puts people at risk for gum disease and oral infections, interferes with chewing, and is painful. You can control how much of the base processing is handled by X-Transformer, and how much you want to leave to Lightroom. If you’re unhappy with how Lightroom handles the RAW conversion, but still want to use Lightroom, you can use X-Transformer to bypass Lightroom’s RAW conversion stage. You can then work with Lightroom, for example as if it’s a RAW file. By using the DNG format, you get a file that is effectively as editable as the original RAW file but you are using X-Transformer’s engine to handle the conversion. It takes the core processing engine from Iridient Developer and uses it to basically pre-process your RAW files to convert them into DNGs. X-Transformer is actually really clever in what it does. So what are the advantages and disadvantages of X-Transformer It really just handles the raw conversion and basic editing, so many people who use Iridient Developer prefer to finish in another piece of software such as Lightroom or Photoshop, and while it has options for making this process as painless as possible, you still get back a flattened tiff or jpeg file which has some limits for further edibility compared to what you get from X-Transformer. Iridient Developer also lacks tools such as spot removal, selective editing and so on. It also lacks things like gradients, grain, and so on. Highlight recovery can be a little trickier to achieve in Iridient Developer too. For example, in my opinion, while it has some profiles for matching Fuji Film simulations, but they are not quite as accurate as Lightroom’s. While it has a lot of controls for managing the raw conversion, it is perhaps not as fully featured or as good as Lightroom in other areas. Iridient Developer gives you a really high degree of control over various aspects of the raw conversion, much more than you get in most software, so if you want to take the time to understand the options you can eek out a lot of detail from images. It has a full visual interface, and you have a surprising degree of control over various image parameters.įor Fuji X-Trans users you can achieve some very high quality and detailed conversions by using Iridient Developer, but it requires a degree of understanding as there are a lot of parameters that you can tweak which can affect the image quality. Iridient Developer being a fully featured editing and conversion application allows you to make complete edits to your image. So in a nutshell, Iridient Developer is a complete editing solution, while X-Transformer is designed to work as a companion to other software such as Lightroom What are the advantages and disadvantages of Iridient Developer? Doing this preserves a degree of editability of the RAW file, but allows you to use Iridient’s conversion engine to handle the demosaicing and should you choose, sharpening and noise reduction. Iridient X-Transformer, on the other hand, is basically the core processing engine stripped of its interface, and it is designed primarily to convert your Fuji Raw files into DNGs using Iridient’s own conversion engine. So What is the difference?īasically, Iridient Developer, which has been around for a while is a fully featured raw conversion and editing application. One of the questions that I get regularly from readers and viewers is: “what the difference is between Iridient X-Transformer and Iridient Developer?” If you are considering one of these for converting X-Trans files, it may be confusing for some people as to which one to choose, so here is what I hope will be a simple guide to deciding which software to use. You control 5 little characters as they try to plant a light seed while avoiding the dark parasites that also inhabit their tree. It was released in 2012 by Amanita Design for Windows and Linux and has an almost perfect positive score on Steam.īotanicula has been described as a heartwarming adventure that takes you through over 150 detailed and beautiful locations with hundreds of funny animations and secret bonuses. Some of these are there to be watched and enjoyed, while others are minigames - none will prove too taxing - but they all add yet more flavour to the environment and are a highlight.Botanicula is an indie point-and-click adventure game following the humorous adventures of 5 quirky creatures. Creaks also includes a number of mechanical paintings to discover. His nervous scratching animations and perpetually freaked-out expressions are always fun to watch. The dingy setting is equally epic libraries, rickety lifts, dusty cellars and halls filled with faces all add to an otherworldly atmosphere that your tousle-headed hero looks completely out of place exploring. The colossal monster plaguing the underground city’s bird-like denizens makes for some fascinating cutscenes. Manoeuvring them into place provides the meat of Creaks puzzle design over the eight to ten hours it’ll take to complete.Īs is Amanita’s brand, the story is told through mime, gesticulation and garbled nonsense, and it works incredibly well. Each creature has specific ticks that let you know what their next move will be: dog eyes turn red before attacking, doppelgangers thrust their pointy heads towards you if you get too close, and the passive jellyfish look up and down to determine their next path. The interaction between your enemies (some are terrified of others and will actively retreat from them) provides innovative solutions as well. The clockwork paintings are a lovely collectible that actually add to the game, rather than being thrown in for trophy hunters When timing puzzles are introduced, the frustration factor jumps significantly - though that is matched by the satisfaction you’ll feel in cracking a puzzle involving lining up multiple creatures to set off switches. Even so, the sheer number of rooms you are tasked with overcoming means that repetition starts to creep in at the halfway mark. The game drip-feeds incremental changes throughout, such as giving you a remote control to activate lights, or throwing puzzles at you requiring several layers of challenges to be solved before progressing. It’s a linearity that will be familiar to puzzle fans but perhaps not to those with knowledge of Amanita’s back catalogue, who may be expecting the delight of uncovering new and quirky discoveries on their own rather than being funneled down a set route. There is usually only one route through a room which you need to figure out by watching the movements of the creatures and tinkering with the switches to see what they activate. Where Creaks suffers is in its familiarity, both with the genre and - later - with itself. Once transformed, the now harmless hat stand or bedside table can be moved to hold down pressure pads to open up new areas or manipulate the room in other clever ways…as long as the light remains on them. Getting caught by one is an instant fail, but each room contains ladders, levers and switches which your protagonist must use to block off enemies, force them outside of their standard patrol patterns, or even turn them into household objects by shining a light on them. Floating jellyfish, robot dogs and evil doppelgangers all work to block your way from one room to the next as you descend into ever stranger depths. The bedsit of a young man kicks off the creepy shenanigans, revealing a hole in his wall that leads to an underground world filled with weird inhabitants. Yet all of Amanita’s hallmarks are present and correct: sublime sound design, fantastic hand-drawn artwork, kooky animation and gibberish voice acting that passes for language in a far more endearing way than Yooka-Laylee and its ilk managed. That fact alone may prove disappointing to fans of the studio expecting a horror take on their earlier games. In comparison, Creaks is a linear puzzle platform game. Hence, the contraction wave starts to have a stronger and stronger grinding effect. On its lower side, your stomach is narrower, with thicker muscular walls. While the chyme is being mixed at the top of the stomach, while our small protein loses its 3D shapes and even starts to break apart, losing some of its peptide bonds, the wave of contraction reaches the bottom of the stomach. Overall in the digestion process, pepsin accounts for 10-20% of protein digestion 2, 3. Pepsin starts to break down peptide bonds between amino acids 2, 6, creating smaller and smaller polypeptides. Interestingly enough, once pepsin is activated, it also acts as an autocatalyzer, an accelerator, on pepsinogen conversion 2, 5! Leading to an even faster activation rate of pepsin! Like other proteins, it will end up being digested. In presence of hydrogen ions, as soon as pH is below 6, pepsinogen loses a short series of amino acids and becomes the active protease pepsin. This is because pepsinogen is also a protein, hence its 3D structure is also sensitive to pH. While flowing into the stomach, while being mixed with the acidic chyme, pepsinogen undergoes a transformation. Precisely, in the gastric pits, another kind of cell, the chief cells, have also added to the gastric juice a precursor of a protease, pepsinogen. This is because acidity disrupts the weak hydrogen bonds that maintain the protein folded 1.Īt this stage, however, amino acid chains are still intact, as pH does not break the strong peptide bonds between amino acids (most of the time) 1.īut, this unfolding already makes protein much more vulnerable to protease attacks ! It mixes the bolus with gastric juice, creating a mixture called chyme, where hydrogen ions and enzymes diffuse evenly around proteins 2.īeing now soaked into the chyme, under such a strong acidity, our small protein starts to denature, meaning that it begins to lose its 3D structure. These waves of contraction, called peristalsis, move at a speed of about 1 cm per second 2.Īt the top of the stomach, the contraction wave has a churning effect. When the bolus that you propelled into your esophagus lands in the stomach, it discovers a strange cavity whose walls are slowly contracting in waves traveling from top to down. Yes, you really have hydrochloric acid in your stomach! The release of this very acidic juice by the gastric pits strengthens the acidity in the stomach to about pH 2 3, 5. Hidden in these pits are cells, the parietal cells 2– 4, that secrete a digestive juice, the gastric juice.Īmong other components, this juice contains hydrogen ions and chloride ions, that is, hydrochloric acid. The walls of the stomach contain small indentations, called gastric pits. Instead, they play a role in regulating the blood flow in the salivary glands 2.Įventually, this mechanical action of chewing with your teeth and mixing with your tongue creates a mixture called the bolus, which you propel to the esophagus when swallowing.īut even before you swallow, your stomach is already diligently preparing for the next step. Yet, saliva does contain proteases, that is, enzymes that break down proteins.īut these proteases, called kallikreins are not directly involved in the digestion process of protein. In contrast, big chunks of entangled proteins, whose peptide bonds are difficult to reach by enzymes, are more difficult to digest. So, if protein structure is not affected by mastication and mixing, why are we saying that protein digestion starts in the mouth?īecause when food fragments are small and coated with saliva, they are easily moved down by your esophagus, your stomach processes them more efficiently, and their surface area in contact with enzymes is much greater 2.Ĭhewing proteins is thus an important step that prepares for the chemical digestion process later in the stomach and small intestine. Nor does it break the weaker bonds, such as hydrogen bonds 1, that maintain the protein chain folded in secondary and even tertiary 3D structures. It does not break the peptide bonds 1, the strong linkages between amino acids, that create the chain of amino acids called the primary structure of the protein. But this mechanical breakdown does not affect the molecular structure of the proteins. |
